December 4th-December 10th 2022

The strong start to the season continues for the Kent State Golden Flashes, as they pick up the 24-point win. They led by as much as 33 at one point in the game.

Senior center Adam Robinson led the Golden Flashes with a double-double. Scoring 17 points in his 27 minutes, while grabbing 13 rebounds. He’d go 7 of 10 from the field. The backcourt of Kurtis McCrary and Jimmie Okotie both scored 15 points. McCrary would add 5 assists. Sophomore center Jack Brown added in 7 points from the bench.

The Huskies would have only one player reach double digits in points, as senior forward Ben Curry scored 10 points with 4 rebounds. Sophomore guard Stephane Bowen led the Huskies bench with 6 points on 2 of 3 shooting.

Kent State dominated in the paint, outscoring Northeastern 32-14. Adam Robinson was awarded player of the game.

The Emerald Coast Classic tournament tipped off last. The first round saw Virginia Tech easily beat Hofstra 89-68, George Mason 69-45 over North Texas and Missouri beat Georgia State 80-67.

The Kent State Golden Flashes and the Oregon State Beavers were the final first-round game to tip-off.

The Beavers came out strong in the first half and took a 37-31 halftime lead. Unfortunately for Beaves fans, Oregon State would fall apart in the second half and get outscored 37-20 in the second half.

Kurtis McCrary led the way for the Kent State Flashes. The Senior guard scored 18 points with 7 rebounds and 4 assists in his 29 minutes of action. Senior center Adam Robinson scored 13 points while grabbing 9 rebounds. Senior guard George Oliver led the way for the Oregon State Beavers, scoring 20 points with 5 rebounds. He’d also have 6 steals. Senior guard Stephen Read scored 11 points with 5 assists.

The Golden Flashes now face the #1 team in the tournament, Virginia Tech next.

The run in the Emerald Coast Classic for Kent State Golden Flashes came to a close, with an 11-point loss to #21 Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies came into the game as 14.5-point favorites, so I guess the bright side is Kent State did better than Vegas expected.

Virginia Tech would head into the locker room at halftime with a 6-point 35-29 lead. Junior forward Greg Gleaves would lead the Hokies at halftime, scoring 10 points on a perfect 5 for 5 shooting. Senior center Adam Robinson led the Golden Flashes at the half with 9 points on 4 of 5 shooting. The first half would see the Hokies outscore the Golden Flashes in the paint 12-8 and second-chance points 6-3 but Kent State would lead in fast break points 6-4.

The second half continued much the same way with the Hokies outscoring the Golden Flashes 33-28 to pick up the 9-point win. Greg Gleaves and Junior forward Jeryl Thomas both scored 19 points. Gleaves would add 6 rebounds, while Thomas grabbed 7. Only two players would score from the bench for the Hokies, Sophomore guard Mark Flanders with 7 points and Sophomore center Dan Haskin with 5 points and 5 rebounds.

Senior center Adam Robinson led the way for Kent State, scoring 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting with 5 rebounds. Jimmie Okotie scored 10 points on 3 for 9 shooting while going 0- for 3 from beyond the arc. Sophomore center Jack Brown scored his season-high 14 points coming off the bench, while also grabbing 4 rebounds.

The Golden Flashes would end the game with a better shooting percentage than the Hokies, 44%-40% but Virginia Tech was just too strong. The Hokies now play Missouri in the finals of the Emerald Coast Classic. (Which Virginia Tech ended up losing 72-62 to Missouri).
