The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cincinnati Reds, 4-2. Toronto pitcher and Centennial, Colorado, native Kevin Gausman led the way. Toronto pitcher Andrew Vasquez got the win. He’s now 1-0. Clay Holmes was tagged with the loss. The Blue Jays have now won 4 straight.

Cavan Biggio, the Toronto second baseman, contributed a 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 4-2, Blue Jays. For the game, Biggio went 1 for 3. He drove in 2 runs. “We’ll keep playing hard and let the chips fall where they may,” said Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo.

Reiver Sanmartin was on the mound for the Reds and pitched 4.1 innings while allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 strikeouts. Clay Holmes came in as relief to get the loss.

The Reds would get on the board with 1B/DH Joey Votto hitting a solo home run to lead off the inning, his 3rd of the season. The Reds would add another in the top of the 3rd inning when Jonathan India hit an RBI double to score Kyle Farmer. However, the Blue Jays would score 2 of their own in the bottom of the 3rd before 2 more in the bottom of the 6th to pick up the win.

After the game, the Reds optioned RP Alexis Diaz to AAA Louisville and placed RP Justin Wilson on active roster.

Reds Roll Over Blue Jays, 9-0
The Cincinnati Reds got a stellar performance from rookie pitcher Hunter Greene, who handcuffed the Toronto offense en route to his first career win, 9-0, at Rogers Centre. In 6 innings, Greene surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 1. He allowed no runs. The Reds raised their record to 14-26.

TJ Friedl, the 26-year-old left fielder, had a direct impact on the outcome. Friedl contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to put Cincinnati up, 2-0. “We’ll relax tonight and enjoy this win,” said Greene.

In a surprise for Reds fans this season, all 9 runs came without a single home run. Jake Fraley would help the Reds offense, going 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Friedl must have done too much partying, as he was diagnosed day to day with a stomach virus after the game.

  • J.D. Martinez blasts 3 home runs to lead Red Sox past Marineers 7-1. Martinez is currently batting .281 with 13 home runs, 28 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He has 39 hits in 139 at-bats.

Cincinnati Bats Go Silent in 5-0 Loss
Toronto got a strong outing from Ross Stripling as the Blue Jays defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 5-0, at Rogers Centre. In 7 innings, Stripling surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 1. He allowed no runs. With the win, Toronto raised its record to 24-17.

The Blue Jays picked up the win with a combination of good hitting and good pitching. “At the end of the day, it’s always about your starting pitcher,” said Toronto skipper Charlie Montoyo.

It was a pitcher’s duel through 6 innings as both teams would head into the 7th inning 0-0. And then the Reds bullpen would completely fall apart, as the Blue Jays would score 4 runs in the 7th and added another for good measure in the bottom of the 8th. Luis Cessa would come in to get the last out in the bottom of the 5th. He’d pitch a solid 3 up 3 down 6th inning before it fell apart in the 7th. He wouldn’t record a single out in the 7th and allowed 4 runs on 3 hits to pick up the loss.
