Blue Jackets Weekly: January 16th-22nd 2022

Ahead of the game in New York vs the Islanders, the Blue Jackets announced that they have moved 23-year-old defenceman Jake Bean from the injured list to the active roster. With the move, the Blue Jackets have placed Dean Kukan on waivers. If he clears he will be sent to the AHL Cleveland Monsters.


The Blue Jackets would open the scoring at 7:32 with Vladislav Gavrikov blast from the point. It would be his 3rd goal of the season, Alexandre Texier (3) and Boone Jenner (7) picked up the assist.

The New York Islanders would tie it at 1 at 2:23 of the 2nd period when Sebastian Aho would slam home a rebound for his 6th of the season. Kyle Palmeiri (9) and Mathew Barzal (27) picked up the assists.

The 3rd period would be all Columbus as they’d score 3 unanswered goals. Staring with Vladislav Gavrikov scoring his 2nd of the game and 4th of the season at the 1:21 mark. Jack Roslovic would close out the scoring with back-to-back goals, his 5 & 6 of the season. Patrik Laine would get an assist on both goals, his 26th, and 27th of the season. Zach Werenski (21) would be the 2nd assist on the 1st goal and Jakub Voracek (24) would be the assist on the 2nd goal.

Joonas Korpisalo was in net for Columbus and stopped 32 of 33 shots with a .970 save percentage. Semyon Varlamov was in net for New York and stopped 42 of 46 for a .913 save percentage.

It would take less than 2 minutes for the Philadelphia Flyers to jump out to the 2-0 lead. It would start at the 1:25 mark with Travis Konecny scoring his 11th of the season, Oskar Lindblom (13), and Keith Yandle (24) picked up the assists. 24 seconds later Yandle would proceed to score his 7th of the season, Kevin Hayes (13) and Travis Konecny (23) with the assists.

The Blue Jackets would finally cut the lead in half to make it 2-1 when Oliver Bjorkstrand scored his 10th of the season. Sean Kuraly (3) picked up the lone assist. The Blue Jackets would tie it at 2 with the lone goal at 17:27 of the 2nd period when Zach Werenski would score his 6th of the season. Brendan Gaunce (4) and Gustav Nyquist (6) with the assists.

The 3rd period would be all Flyers as they’d score 2 unanswered goals to pick up the 4-2 win. James van Riemsdyk would score his 19th of the season, and former Blue Jacket Cam Atkinson (22) would pick up the assist. Joel Farabee (9) would score the final goal for the Flyers, Zack MacEwen (11) and Claude Giroux (22) picked up the assist.

Joonas Korpisalo was in net for Columbus, he stopped 30 of 34 for a .882 save percentage. Carter Hart was in net for the Flyers and stopped 24 of 26 for a .923 save percentage.

It was a night to remember if you were a Pittsburgh Penguins fan and a night to forget if you were a Columbus Blue Jackets fan.

The Penguins would open the game by scoring 3 goals within 8:27. Sidney Crosby (20) would open the scoring, with Teddy Bluegar (5) and former Blue Jacket Jeff Carter (12) rounding out the scoring before the Blue Jackets finally got on the scoreboard. At 16:28 Patrik Laine would slam home a rebound shorthanded for his 28th goal of the season. Jack Roslovic (24) and Vladislav Gavrikov (11) picking up the assists.

Mark Friedman would close out the scoring during the 1st period by netting his 6th of the season at 19:19 of the period. Drew O’Connor (3) and Sam Lefferty (8) would get the assists. Both teams would score 2 goals apiece in the middle 20 minutes. With Jason Zucker (11) and Mark Friedman scoring his 2nd of the game and 7th of the season. Patrik Laine would score his 2nd of the game and 29th of the season and Zach Werenski would score his 7th of the season on the powerplay.

The 3rd period would see Pittsburgh score 4 unanswered goals; Jason Zucker (12), Teddy Blueger (6), Jeff Carter (13) and Kris Letang (8).

Tristan Jerry was in net for Pittsburgh and would stop 30 of 33 for a .909 save percentage. Elvis Merzlikins would get the start for Columbus and would be pulled after 36:46, allowing 6 goals on 30 shots. Joonas Korpisalo would come in and stop 20 of 24 for a .833 save percentage.

The Blue Jackets now have a day off before hosting the Ottawa Senators (24-19-2, 50pts).


  • Evgeni Malkin and Pittsburgh have come to an agreement keeping the centre in a Penguins uniform for another 1 year. The deal is worth $6,450,000 and a formal press conference has been scheduled for tomorrow.
  • League insiders are reporting that the Tampa Bay Lightning are shopping Corey Perry. Team officials offered no comment, but talks were apparently underway with at least three potential destinations for Perry. Edmonton, Nashville, and Los Angeles are all believed to be interested in the right wing, but the details of what they might be offering are vague.
