Reds Recap: Tigers @ Reds 9/3-9/5

The Detroit Tigers got the early lead on the Reds, with Jeimer Candelario’s solo home run in the top of the 2nd inning. It’d stay that way until the top of the 4th inning when the Tigers would score 4 more to make it 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 4th inning. The Reds would get 2 of those back in the bottom half of the inning when Jesse Winker would hit a 2 run RBI double to center to score both Andrew Vaughn and Nicholas Castellanos.

The Tigers would put the game away in the top of the 7th when they added another run to make it the final of 5-2. Michael Fulmer would start on the mound for the Tigers and only last 3.0 innings before leaving the game early with an injury. As of press time, there has been no update on his condition. Tyler Alexander would come in from the bullpen and pick up the win. Pitching 2.0 innings and allowing just 1 hit with 2 strikeouts. Ryan Yarbrough picked up the loss for the Reds. He pitched 4.1 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

As if things couldn’t get worse, Reds center fielder Francesco Rosado left the game early and has been diagnosed with a fractured shin. He’s expected to miss the rest of the season. Tyler Naquin left the game early as well, as he was suffering from lower back pain. He’s officially listed day to day.


The Cincinnati Reds would get out to the early lead of 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st. It started with an Andrew Vaughn solo home run to right, his 11th of the season. The next batter, Nicholas Castellanos, would proceed to walk before Eugenio Suárez would double to left to score Castellanos, his 65th RBI of the season.

The Tigers would tie it at 2 in the top of the 3rd inning on a 2 RBI single by Bob Montes. The Tigers would proceed to outscore the Reds 4-0 in the final 3 innings to pick up the 6-3 win.

Spencer Turnbull was on the mound to start for the Tigers and pitched 5.0 innings while allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts. Julio Teheran would pick up the win in relief, pitching a scoreless inning while allowing only 1 hit. Sean Manaea would start for the Reds and pitch 6.0 innings while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts. Michael Lorenzen picked up the loss for the Reds, pitching just 2/3rds of an inning and allowing 3 runs on 2 hits. Gregory Soto would pick up the save, his 36th of the season.


The Detroit Tigers scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning due to a Renato Núñez 2 run home run to center, his 21st home run of the season, and RBI 53 and 54. The Tigers would add another in the top of the 2nd when Niko Goodrum hit his 44th home run of the season.

It would take until the 7th inning for the Reds to finally get on the scoreboard before the Tigers would add their final run in the top of the 8th to pick up the 4-1 win and all 3 games of the series vs the Reds. Matthew Boyd started for the Tigers and pitched 6.1 innings while allowing 1 run on 5 hits to pick up the win. Tyler Mahle started for the Reds and pitched 5.0 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts. Gregory Soto picked up his 37th save of the season for the Tigers.
