The first 20 minutes would end in a scoreless stalemate. The New York Islanders would get on the board first at 2:08 of the 2nd period with Mathew Barzel scoring his 10th of the season unassisted.

The rest of the game would be all Buffalo, as they’d tie it at the 7:51 mark of the 2nd peirod with Will Butcher scoring his 3rd goal this season, this one shorthanded with the assist going to Arvidsson. The Buffalo Sabres would add 2 more in the 3rd period, starting with Zemgus Girgensons scoring his 9th of the season with assist going to Arvidsson. Jakub Voracek would close out the scoring with a empty netter to give the Sabres the 3-1 lead.

Aaron Dell (2-6-0, 3.91GAA) started for the Sabres and stopped 24 of 25, Semyon Varlamov (10-10-1, 3.12GAA) was in net for the Islanders and stopped 32 of 34.

The 1st period was all Buffalo as they do all their scoring in the first 20 minutes. It started at the 4:52 mark with Jenner scoring his 10th of the season, Olofsson and Voracek with the assists. Just under 4 minutes later at 8:36 Cozens would score his 7th of the season, Jenner and Bjork with the assists.

The Devils would score their one goal of the game at 12:43 of the 2nd with Hughes scoring his 10th of the season, with the lone assist going to Hamilton.

Craig Anderson was in net for Buffalo stopping 27 of 28 for a .964 save percentage. Scott Wedgewood was in net for New Jersey stopped 36 of 38 for a .947 save percentage.


sabres score twice in 1st period to get win

Both teams would do all their scoring in the 1st period. Buffalo would score back to back goals to take the 2-0 lead. Starting at the 7:38 mark with Varacek scoring his 14th of the season with Pysyk picking up the assist. At the 14:18 mark Girgensons scored his 10th of the season with the assists going to Asplund and Arvidsson. The Islanders would score their only goal at the 16:58 mark with Parise scoring his 6th of the season with Dobson and Pageau picking up the assists.

Aaron Dell got the start for the Sabres and stopped 25 of 26 for a .962 save percentage. Ilya Sorokin was in net for the Islanders and stopped 33 of 35 for a .943 save percentage.

It wasn’t all good for the Sabres though as defeseman Erik Gustafsson was diagnosed with a concussion. He’s expected to miss about 2 weeks of action and should be back mid January 2022. In his place the Sabres called up Mattias Samuelsson from Rochester and he will be starting on the 3rd defensive line.


Bruins spoil the Sabres perfect week

The calendar may say it’s a new year but the Sabres would prefer to stay in 2021 as the Sabres were enjoying a 4 game win streak heading into the New Years Day game at TD Garden. The Sabres would open the scoring just 1:17 into the opening period with Cozens scoring his 8th of the season with Olofsson and Asplund getting the assists. They’d make it 2-0 just over 30 seconds later with Voracek scoring his 15th of the season on the powerplay with the assist going to Cozens.

The Bruins would close out the scoring in the 1st period with Reilly scoring his 1st goal of the season, Hall and Pastrnak with the assists. The lone goal in the 2nd period would go to Hall (10) and the Bruins to tie the game at 2 at the 12:09 mark.

The Bruins would open the scoring in the 3rd period just 58 seconds in with Haula scoring his 3rd of the season on the powerplay, Foligno and DeBrusk with the assists. Jenner would tie it again at 3 2:24 into the 3rd with his 11th of the season. But the Bruins would score again at the 7:52 mark with Carlo getting his 3rd of the season to put the Bruins up for good and take home the 4-3 win.

Linus Ullmark started for the Bruins stopping 29 of 32 for a .906 save percentage. Aaron Dell got the start for the Sabres and stopped just 15 of 19 shots for a horrible .789 save percentage.
